The short answer
Grasscloth needs a smooth primed wall, careful paste control and rolls laid out in sequence so shade shifts look natural. We install it in Pembroke Park living rooms, bedrooms and offices with methods suited to humid South Florida air.
Grasscloth is woven from natural fibers such as sisal, jute, hemp or arrowroot and glued to a paper backing. It brings a warm, tactile surface that printed vinyl cannot copy, and it also behaves very differently on the wall. Each roll varies in shade, the fibers stain if paste touches the face, and the seams always show to some degree. For homeowners in Pembroke Park, a small town in southern Broward County roughly seven miles northeast of our Miami Gardens shop, we handle grasscloth as its own specialty rather than treating it like any other roll. That means slower, cleaner work and a plan that respects the material's quirks.
Why natural fiber needs a different approach
Unlike a printed paper, grasscloth has no repeating pattern to line up. Instead, the installer manages color. Fibers are dyed and woven in batches, so two neighboring strips can read slightly lighter or darker. Before any paste is mixed, we unroll and compare every bolt in good light, number them and decide the hanging order so the change across the wall looks gradual rather than striped.
Some designers reverse every other strip to soften edge shading. Others prefer every strip running the same direction. We follow the manufacturer's instructions on the label first, then talk through the look you want.
- Inspect each roll for flaws, knots and loose weave before cutting
- Lay out bolts in sequence to blend shade variation
- Confirm run numbers match across the whole order
- Plan seam placement away from the main line of sight when possible
Keeping paste off the face
Water and adhesive leave marks on raw fiber that cannot be wiped away. A single smear from a wet sponge can show as a dark patch for the life of the wall. That is why we apply paste only to the backing, keep hands and tools clean, and never wash the surface the way we would a vinyl paper. Seams are pressed with a dry roller and a soft brush instead of a damp cloth.
This careful handling also matters near trim. Cutting along the ceiling line and baseboard is done with very sharp blades changed often, because a dull edge frays the weave and leaves loose threads.
Wall preparation under a textured paper
Because grasscloth is fairly thin at the backing, flaws in the wall can telegraph through and catch side light from a window. Interior plaster over concrete block, common in older Broward homes, often has subtle dips and repaired spots. We skim and sand those areas until they are flat, then apply a pigmented wallcovering primer. A tinted primer close to the fiber color also helps hide the narrow line of wall that might peek through at a seam.
If the wall has old paper, we remove it fully. Hanging grasscloth over a previous covering raises the risk of bubbles and seam lift.
Grasscloth in a humid climate
South Florida never has a truly dry season, and summer brings daily afternoon storms with thick, wet air. Natural fibers absorb that moisture and can swell or relax, while air conditioning pulls them back. We place grasscloth in rooms with steady climate control, such as living areas, primary bedrooms, dining rooms and offices, and steer clear of full bathrooms, laundry rooms or spots near a door that opens to the patio all day.
Before hanging, rolls rest in the room so they reach the same temperature and humidity as the wall. Afterward, we suggest keeping the AC on a consistent setting rather than shutting it off for long stretches, which helps the fibers stay settled.
Caring for the finished wall
Grasscloth is a low-maintenance surface if you treat it gently. Dust it with a soft brush attachment on a vacuum every so often. Keep cleaning sprays away from it, and blot spills right away with a dry cloth instead of rubbing. Direct sun through west-facing glass can fade dyed fibers over time, so sheer curtains or UV film are worth considering in very bright rooms.
If a strip ever gets damaged, having one or two extra bolts from the same run on hand makes a repair much easier to blend.
